A fake credit card scam is a fraudulent activity that operates with the intention of obtaining personal financial information by asking for a fee or by pretending to provide such information. The name of the credit card issuer is often used as a stage name for the front of the card, and in some cases the number is used. In other cases, both the number and the name may be used. Typically, though, the “front” of the credit card is identical to the number on the card.
A fake credit card scam can be easily recognized by looking for a red or yellow mark near the number, or by seeing a series of numbers, usually four or five, on the back of the card. Also, a logo or the text of a business will usually be found either on the front or on the back of the card. If you are asked for a credit card number in this way, the scam is being run by a company or person that specializes in credit card “skimming”. This is an illegal, deceptive, and often profitable practice, in which companies or people gain personal information by asking for it illegally, and then using that information without the consumer's consent.
Another telltale sign of a fake credit card scam is that the business will often ask for an advance fee to process your transaction. If you don't have an account already, they will request your permission to open an account for you. If you give the go ahead, they will begin to “process” your order, charging your credit card for what amounts they say you owe them. These accounts will show up on your credit report as “debit”, “receipt”, “limit”, “limit re-load”, or even “charged but not accepted”, indicating that the company is holding your card. If you ever attempt to make a claim for something that is not yours, you will most likely not get paid.
Another way to spot a fake credit card service is if the website offers an instant approval or guaranteed approval. These websites are often set up by scammers just to capture your personal information. They will typically offer a low interest rate but will rarely offer a decent card value. If you ever fill out the online application form, be sure to fill it out correctly. Most legitimate companies will require that you provide at least some basic financial information.
A fake credit card website will often promise to waive any fees, charges, or penalties that you might incur when you try to make a purchase with your new “card”. These claims are fraudulent, because no legitimate credit card company will ever do anything that would make them liable for a payment that you didn't make. Any legitimate credit card company will work with you, give you options, and help you determine the best solution to your credit card situation. A “real” credit card company will never require an upfront fee, or try to get you to agree to a settlement before you've settled your own debt.
You can spot a fake credit card service by watching for one of two things. If a website says that their service is guaranteed, then they are lying. If a website makes unbelievable claims, such as “unlimited credit card approvals”, then they are lying. Either way, you should avoid using their services entirely. If you're going to use a credit card, it's important to know you're protected.
