The Chargeback Prevention Protection Plan was designed by MasterCard to protect their cardholders from unauthorized transactions. Chargebacks occur when a consumer notifies MasterCard that they are not satisfied with a transaction that occurred on their account. An authorized user may attempt to make an unauthorized transaction in order to attempt to recoup some or all of the money that was spent. A Chargeback is an unauthorized transaction. The cardholder will be notified via mail and usually has up to seventy-two hours to remedy the situation.
Chargebacks are reported by credit card companies in the same way as regular credit card transactions. Chargebacks are entered into the company's system whenever a financial institution accept the card for payment. Credit card companies use a dedicated system to track Chargebacks, which will typically contain the date and the contact information of the cardholder who filed the dispute. The cardholder will receive an email informing them that their Chargeback has been placed into the system, and an authorization code may be required to process the disputed transaction.
If a customer cannot determine the validity of the Chargeback, they should report it to the credit card company's established dispute procedure. The dispute procedure consists of three parts. First, the cardholder must notify the company in writing that they are not satisfied with the transaction. Second, the company must investigate the matter and if no reasonable solution can be found, the Chargeback will be deleted from the customer's account.
Reinstatement charges can also occur under the following chargeback reason codes: recurring transaction charges, recurring transaction limit charges, and recurring monthly charges. Any time a customer is charged for a Chargeback, they must notify the company in writing that they want to reinstate the transaction. Once the company receives the letter from the cardholder, they will perform the necessary credit card transaction processing for the merchant to process the Chargeback again. The merchant is then expected to process the Chargeback again with the same or different authorization code. The last option is for both parties to enter into a dispute resolution process once all attempts to resolve the Chargeback have been unsuccessful. This is referred to as the dispute resolution phase.
Chargebacks are not uncommon on merchant accounts. Merchants do not need to deal with these issues as much as consumers. In addition, merchant banks tend to treat Chargebacks in a more favorable manner than credit card companies. To be entitled to the maximum amount of credit card refunds, a merchant bank must process Chargebacks in a timely fashion.
Chargebacks should not be ignored. They occur far too frequently and can have a negative impact on a merchant's credit card chargeback report. In fact, many merchants do not pass on the benefits of their Chargebacks to their customers. If a customer does not receive the funds they were expecting, they often file a chargeback and the offending merchant bank will receive a negative comment on its website.
Arbitration means two things. First, there is an impartial third-party individual or entity that arbitrates the dispute between you and the credit card issuer. Second, there may be a panel of neutral third-party individuals or entities that decide the case with regards to both parties.
