The number of scam artists who want to steal your personal information continues to rise. One recent scam involves emailing a potential victim fake credit card applications and asking for personal information. Scam artists are even sending junk mail that has false offers about getting “special offers” for “cash back”. If you get one of these emails, it's best not to respond.
What can you do if you've been the victim of a scam? In most cases, you need to report the fraud to the credit card company and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) before you will be able to take legal action. However, sometimes victims of fake credit card information need to take action against the company that issued the cards in the first place.
These companies can be very tricky. Sometimes they have absolutely no idea who you are, how to contact you, or what to do in terms of contacting you. They also typically have no idea what the consequences of such actions will be. This makes them very vulnerable to pressure from marketers who want to sell their products.
There are many ways that fake credit card information can be sold to consumers. First, they can be sold by companies that send out junk mail to consumers who don't even own credit cards. This is often how telemarketers make money. Next, they can be sold by Internet marketers who are looking to solicit private information about consumers. This is often the case with spam emails. Then there are companies who sell spy ware to the unsuspecting consumer.
Once, someone purchases something, the card company sends them an electronic invoice. This usually contains a pre-written sales agreement that includes the name and address of the cardholder, the card's security code, and other basic information. Sometimes the contract includes miscellaneous information such as shipping and handling fees, credit limit and billing statement. A lot of these contracts include the information needed to obtain the cardholder's social security number, but they are not usually hard copies. The original copy can be destroyed; however, most companies keep copies for their records.
If a company is selling information directly to a consumer, they are legally required to disclose that fact. However, this information is still considered proprietary, trade secrets, or the like. When this happens, it is very important for the credit card company to protect themselves. They can do this by shredding documents that prove the credit card holder's identity, or by having the person's credit card number blocked.
To protect yourself against fake credit card information, be sure to check your monthly credit card statements for charges that don't make sense. If you find unauthorized charges in your statements, report them immediately. Contact both the credit card company and the police, or at least your financial institution, to investigate the case. At the very least, block the person's name from being added to your accounts, and report any suspicious activity to the credit card monitoring service that you have taken advantage of.
In the end, fake credit cards are a problem that can be easily avoided. If you do choose to purchase a credit card, verify all necessary information, and file any suspicious charges immediately. It may take a bit of work and a bit of time, but it will be well worth it in the long run. After all, you never know when someone else is using your credit card, and it isn't always your fault if something unexpected happens.
Don't let someone else use your own information to purchase a credit card or a loan, because you could be held responsible. Even if you already have a credit card, if you are given another one, beware of fake credit card information. Report it as soon as you can to credit card companies, banks, and law enforcement officials. These are only a few ways to protect yourself and your credit, so take action now.
If a lender catches onto your fake credit card information, they may be more willing to work with you on lowering your monthly payments or waiving fees. In some cases, they may even be able to remove the entire debt from your credit report, which will allow you to start all over again with fresh credit and a clean financial history. However, keep in mind that even if you do get rid of the debt entirely, you'll still need to maintain a good credit score to qualify for a new card.
