A cardholder verification code, also known as a CVV2, is an eight-digit number that is included on most credit and debit cards. This number is used in order to make it possible for the cardholder to check whether or not they are currently authorized to make purchases. There are, however, a number of circumstances in which you will want to make use of this particular type of card security code.
First of all, if you have a merchant account with a certain financial institution, chances are good that you are issued a VOP or magnetic stripe card. On these cards is a security code known as a CVV2. The number, when entered, will allow you to make it possible for the financial institution to verify your identity. If you do not have a merchant account with this type of bank, chances are good that you will not be issued one at all. Instead, you will be required to show proof of having an existing account with the financial institution.
The next reason to make use of a CVV2 card security code is when you are purchasing gift cards and store cards from the store. If you do not have one of these gift cards, chances are very good that the store will ask you to enter a VOP instead of a signature strip. You will then be asked to complete the transaction using your debit card. In some cases, if you are trying to purchase gift cards from multiple stores, you may be required to provide each store with a separate VOP. If you cannot provide each store with a specific VOP, you may be required to provide all of them with a unique VOP.
When you go to purchase gas at a station, chances are great that the gas station will require you to show proof of your ID (which is a card security code of four digits). This can often happen if you do not have a card number. A lot of times, the station will require you to punch in your card number before you can access your PIN (personalized credit card). However, you can also buy gas at a station with a cashier's terminal that has a four-digit pin number option. This will allow you to access your PIN even without having to provide your card number.
An alternative for those who need to have a VOP is going to the bank where you keep your major checking and savings accounts. When you give this information to the bank clerk, they will often ask for your signature strip (the card security code) instead of your card number. It is a good idea to always keep your security code with you, though, in case this ever happens.
Another option is to always carry your VOP with you. Instead of carrying a wallet full of different credit cards, you will only have to carry the card security code with you. This will make it easier for you to access your VOP when you need it.
If you are worried about this type of security violation, you might be glad to know that your magnetic stripe can't be skimmed. This is what happens if someone tries to use your magnetic stripe to order items online from an online retail site. When they try to order the item and enter the incorrect magnetic stripe number, the system will reject the transaction. There are no two ways about it – when you enter the wrong pin number, the transaction is denied. The only option is to get a replacement card with a different VOP.
If you think this would be bothersome, you can purchase a new VOP with a different security code. Many merchants offer their customers the option of changing their security codes on future purchases. However, you can also purchase a pre-installed magnetic stripe with a new code. If you choose this option, however, you may want to wait for your VOP to be activated and use it as an additional security code. Many merchants also offer to transfer your balance to a new credit card with a lower rate of interest. This is another way of minimizing credit card fraud.
