With the impending transition to the new EMV 3D standard next year, Visa is once again rebranding its old 3D Secure authentication brand to Visa Secure. The change is part of a wider effort by the card network to bolster the security features of its card, as part of a broader effort to penetrate malware and fraud in the card and credit card industry. The days when Visa and MasterCard were the only cards that could be issued with real security are now gone. Other cards including American Express, Discover and JCB have been issuing plastic cards with the integrated technology, but without the storied reputation that the two giants enjoy. Visa's move to strengthen its own authentication technology will go some way towards reviving the image of the card brand, which has been battered by recent credit card fraud incidents that were blamed on hackers associated with organized crime.
This latest upgrade to the secure portion of the card's process brings together Visa's existing hardware and software and adds a new layer of authentication to it. Rather than presenting a person's debit or credit card number at the time of authorization, the new card will present the person's VISA or MasterCard number, with a cryptogram that will allow authorized users to enter the pin numbers they know to be legitimate. This added layer of authentication means that the new card will be used more carefully than the traditional cards. Visa will also require that the user enter a PIN at the time of authorization rather than relying on the common “enter your pin number” warning that many people have grown accustomed to when ordering products online.
There are other ways that Visa can increase the security of its transactions in the wake of recent events involving MasterCard and Visa. First, it is strongly recommending that merchants acquire verified digital certificates for all of their credit card transactions. Digital certificates provide additional assurance to consumers that the card information being presented is safe and that the merchant has verified the card number in question. This is a much simpler process than it was to obtain a physical card number a few years ago and is generally free to all merchants who make use of major networks like Visa.
Another way that Visa is signaling its willingness to aggressively guard its cardholders is through automatic enrollment. Automatic enrollment occurs when a website is approved for processing by Visa. The merchant submits information regarding its business, its financial institution processing partners, and its sales volume and determines whether or not it is eligible for an automatic enrollment. The website then sends a request to the enrollment authority, who determines whether or not the information presented is appropriate and if so sends it to Visa. If Visa finds that the site is fraudulent, it will refuse to allow the online merchant to process any future transactions.
The automatic enrollment process works even better when combined with the latest technological innovations in online shopping. Smart phones and tablets offer consumers a mobile method of purchasing that is highly convenient. With this convenient shopping option, merchants no longer need to be concerned with whether or not their customers will accept their payment. If they are verified by Visa, the smart phone or tablet has already been verified and it is automatically enrolled in the Visa system.
In addition to automatically enrolled sites, some merchants are taking advantage of new methods that allow them to verify cardholders even while they are away from the computer. For example, at times Google can automatically enroll a new cardholder's account. A potential customer can simply log on, create their online account, and complete their online transaction all from the device of their choice. In fact, many online merchants have discovered that they can meet up with prospective clients and close a deal without ever having to meet the person in person.
Visa and MasterCard have always been diligent in protecting the integrity of their cardholder information. Unfortunately, hackers have found a way to hack into these systems and steal credit card numbers. It is no surprise that online merchants use verified by Visa and MasterCard logos to provide peace of mind to their customers. When a customer swipes their plastic card at a point of sale terminal, the merchant knows that it has been digitally verified. This provides the assurance that the cardholder's information has been encrypted and protected by tamper resistant encryption and fraud protection technology.
Verified by Visa and MasterCard logos allow the customer to feel safe that their card information is being protected while shopping online. This is especially important for individuals traveling to different countries and who may carry cash and other valuables with them.
