Department of State Visa Bulletin provides information on approved nonimmigrant categories for foreign visitors coming to the United States. The visa services of the State Department include visa application forms, foreign travel insurance, and passport services for travelers coming to the United States on official or non-official occasions. The State Department's Visa Bulletin provides information on the eligibility of certain classes of nonimmigrants, including: business travelers, family travelers, visiting relatives, and emergency travelers. The Visa Bulletin also provides important information on the benefits of particular categories of visas and other information on US Visa Service providers. For international travelers, it provides information on types of visas available.
Visas can be obtained from the Visa Service provider nearest your area through the Department of State's website. To apply for an immigrant visa, you need to visit the consular office of the USDOS. There you will fill out application papers such as a visa application form (if applying for an immigrant visa), applicant confirmation, and payment of fees. Upon approval, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the USDOS. The waiting period usually takes six to eight weeks. If you have applied for an immigrant visa and your application is still being processed, you should contact the USDOS to find out what the status of your application.
Once you receive your visa, you need to obtain a copy from the USDOS that shows your photograph. It is usually required that you depart for your intended destination two to four weeks before your visa expires. You can also purchase additional photos at the visa service provider.
The Department of State's Visa Bulletin can also provide information on nonimmigrant visa categories for some foreign countries, including: citizens of Canada, children or members of the Selected Military; those moving to a different high school or college; and Green Card Holders. The Foreign Language Visa is also available for those individuals who are fluent in at least one language other than English. Anyone traveling to the United States on a student visa is required to remain in the country for one year after graduation from an accredited high school or college.
In cases where you are denied a visa, the reason may be rejected because your application did not include necessary documentary evidence or documentation. In such cases, the applicant can request an exception from the USDOS. However, there are strict requirements for the exception request to be valid. A complete description of your employment, family details, employment history, and the purpose of your visit to the United States must be submitted along with your application. You must also inform the USDOS if you will be attending school during the months of December and January.
In addition to the requirements listed above, you may be required to attend an interview with a consular representative in person. In this meeting, you will be presented with specific instructions regarding your visa application. The USDOS caseworker will provide you with further details and recommendations regarding your visa.
